Newborn babies cry for a variety of reasons, bored, hungry, tired, lonely or has a dirty nappy, however once the baby's needs have been attended to they go off to sleep. For some babies, the crying continues even though the parents have done everything they can think of to settle their baby down and the parents become distraught themselves.
